Before I start to explain what sound healing is and how it works, it’s important to understand how we are affected by sound and why.
How are we affected
First let’s start with how we’re affected by sound. Think about the sounds you experience on a daily basis and how they can alter your mood. For example, a happy song can make you want to bounce around the house and really lift your spirits, yet an emotionally filled or sad song can sometimes bring you to the brink of tears.
Our words also have a huge impact on us. When a friend says something positive, it can boost our energy and yet something negative can leave us feeling deflated and low; it’s all to do with energy and vibration.
Energy
You see everything is energy. All living things vibrate at a specific frequency and each of us vibrates at our own unique frequency too! 💡 So it may make more sense to you now why we use the term ‘we’re on the same wavelength’, because we are drawn to those whom we feel in sync with and are therefore of a similar frequency to us.
Vibration
And the reason we’re so affected by vibration and frequency is because we are made up of approximately 70% water and so we absorb the sounds and vibrations around us. Crystal bowl and gong master Malbert Lee explains that “water is a great conductor for sound vibration. When vibrations travel through the body, they promote circulation, energy flow and rejuvenation. The frequency of the sound synchronises with the brainwaves and activates de-stress responses in the body.”
Let’s delve a little deeper
If we delve into Sound Healing a little more now, hopefully it will paint a better picture for you of how it all works. Sound Healing is the use of vibrations and frequencies to relax the mind and the body.
Different frequencies have the ability to entrain the brainwaves and subtly work through the body. We usually start in a waking conscious state (known as beta) and then slowly drift into a more relaxed state (known as the alpha state) – this is the juicy zone where we get inspirations and can drift off into a daydream (I’m often in this zone when I’m in the shower).
The next brain state is Theta where we are in a state of meditation and lastly, certain frequencies can take you to the delta state, to a place of deep sleep and where deep healing can take place.
Although this might all seem a bit out there, the use of sound and vibration for therapeutic purposes actually goes back millennia. The ancient Egyptians used something called toning, which was the manipulation of vowel sounds to produce a healing effect. And in ancient Greece, music was used to treat mental disorders.
These days, we tend to encounter sound healing in the form of crystal singing bowls, voice, mantra, chanting, gongs, Tibetan singing bowls and tuning forks.
The benefits
Although the science around sound healing is still quite new, here are a few of the many reported benefits of sound meditation:
- lower stress and anxiety levels
- less headaches and migraines (something I personally noticed)
- a reduction of pain
- lower blood pressure
- less mood swings
- lower cholesterol
- improved sleep
- Improved focus and concentration at work, the list goes on… 🙂
To appreciate just how powerful sound healing can be you need to really experience it in person and feel the sensations in your body and the after effects!
It can be pure bliss, I still remember how calm and relaxed I felt after my first sound bath.
You can also easily search ‘healing frequencies’ on YouTube and find hundreds of tracks that can support with: insomnia, eliminating fear, bringing in love and compassion, helping with pain and stress, there’s so much amazing free stuff out there!
