A strong personal brand is a very powerful marketing tool when done correctly.
However, if you think branding starts and ends with a logo, then I’m afraid you are wrong.
Your brand is made up of so many elements. Yes it is your logo, your colour palette, your font, but it is also in every interaction someone has with your business, from every email you send, every proposal you create, every social media post you share, every page on your website, every touch point they have with you and your business.
The reality is that your potential clients are making decisions about your business long before they ever enquire. They’re building an impression of who you are, what your values are, and whether they trust you. That impression is formed throughout dozens of small moments and interactions that often go unnoticed.
You see, the businesses that create the strongest connections aren’t necessarily the loudest in the room, or the biggest and boldest, they are the ones that are memorable, consistent, create an impact, and the ones that make people feel something.🌸 People will always remember how you made them feel.
That’s the power of a strong brand.
Your brand lives everywhere
One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make when looking at their branding is, their lack of consistency.
You spend hours creating beautiful Canva graphics and carefully selecting images for your Instagram feed one week, and the next you just throw something together. Or, when it comes to your website you totally forget and it feels like completely different place. The same goes for your newsletter, your blogs, your client proposals and quotes. There is no consistency, and that is a bigger issue than you may think.
Now, none of these things are a huge problem on their own, but together, they create confusion, a lack of consistency, which leads to a lack of trust.
Every touchpoint someone experiences with your business contributes to the overall picture they create in their mind. If those touchpoints all feel disconnected, your brand starts to feel disconnected too, and that is the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve.
Looking at the whole picture might feel too much, and a tad overwhelming and that’s okay. For now, you don’t have to make all the changes at once, you can focus on one at a time. But to do that you at least need to know all the places that your audience might interact with your business:
🌸 Your website
🌸 Social media platforms
🌸 Newsletters and email marketing
🌸 Business cards
🌸 Quotes and proposals
🌸 Contracts and onboarding documents
🌸 Printed marketing materials
🌸 Email signatures
🌸 Workshop presentations and resources
Think about each one of these as an opportunity to reinforce your brand and strengthen the connection with your audience or weaken it if you get it all wrong!
Consistency creates professionalism
Whether we like it or not (well I don’t) people will make assumptions about you and your business. When someone visits your website, has a call with you, and then receives a beautifully branded proposal, that all look and feel consistent, it creates an element of confidence and it tells them you’ve invested time into your business. In short, it tells them you deeply care about the details and most importantly, it tells them you’re blooody professional and that they can trust you.
It is important to remember that professionalism isn’t about being corporate or formal (clearly I’m far from that), but it is about creating an experience that feels intentional. When your branding is consistent, people feel reassured. They feel like they’re dealing with someone who has their act together and someone they can trust.
That’s particularly important for small business owners because often, you and only you are the brand. You’re asking people to trust you personally, not just the service you’re selling.
Familiarity builds trust
Trust isn’t built through a single social media post. It’s built through repetition aka consistency.
Trust is built when:
🌸Someone sees your content regularly.
🌸They visit your website and recognise your consistent visuals and your strong brand voice.
🌸They receive your newsletter and it has an element of familiarity to it.
🌸Your proposal lands in their inbox and instantly feels like an extension of everything they’ve already experienced.
🌸You can back up your excellent visuals and brand voice, with client testimonials and reviews.
As humans, we naturally trust what feels familiar and lean in to things that feel predictable, it allows us to let our gaurd down. Consistent branding creates that sense of familiarity and over time it becomes one of the most powerful trust-building tools you have.
The more consistently people see your brand, the more memorable you become and memorable businesses are much easier to buy from.
A perfect example
Not to sound big headed (because I’m not), but my brand is a perfect example of this.
Often when I am networking, or when I’m running a workshop, or doing a talk, I get approached by people who say they have never met me in person, however, they recognise my business through my brand. They recognise my colours, my elements such as the Unicorn, or my strong brand voice.
I often get really positive feedback on my brand and on my marketing, because people comment on how it makes them feel.
For me, in my marketing I take an ethical and positive approach. It means when I am writing, or creating content to share, I always think about how I want to make the reader feel, and for me, it’s always positive.
As a marketer I am aware that negative marketing can be really powerful and often get better engagement, however for me, as a person, it doesn’t sit right with me to make profit from how shit people feel. I want to make them feel empowered, excited, happy, joyus and leave feeling positive when they meet me, or consume my content, and if that means lower engagement, that’s okay with me.
And that is the power of a strong brand. People remember my brand because of the powerful visuals I create, but also how I made them feel.
And that is because I am consistent with all my branding across all my marketing touch points.
Consistency creates connection
Branding isn’t just about looking or acting ‘professional’ or giving corporate vibes, (if it was I’d be screwed in my Unicorn t-shirt and light up trainers). Branding is about how you make people feel, it’s about being consistent with your visuals and language, and it’s about showing the human element of the business.
The strongest brands aren’t built purely on logos and fonts, but on personality, values and connection.
When someone interacts with your business, they should get the same sense of who you are every single time. Whether they’re reading your blog, scrolling your Instagram feed, or opening one of your newsletters, the experience should feel consistent.
A little secret: this doesn’t mean being perfect, because who on earth is ffing perfect and how boring would that be?! It’s about being recognisable, about showing up unapologetically you (yes, including the unpolished and messy moments!)
When your visual branding, messaging and tone of voice align, your audience starts to feel like they know you. And that is where the magic happens. It’s through building that connection when people are far more likely to engage with you, trust you and buy from you.
Warm leads don’t happen by accident
One of the reasons I talk so much about branding is because I see the impact it has on marketing results. Some business owners think sales come from a single piece of content, when in reality, most people need multiple interactions (up to 17) before they are ready to buy. Someone might:
🦄 Discover you through social media
🦄 Visit your website
🦄 Read a blog
🦄 Join your newsletter
🦄 Download a free resource
🦄 Stalk you on social media for months (in a non creepy and non threatening way)
🦄 Attend a free workshop
🦄 Receive a proposal
It means that by the time they enquire, they’ve already built a relationship with your brand. Every one of those touchpoints has contributed to moving them closer to becoming a client.
That’s why consistent branding is so impactful and powerful! It helps create warm leads rather than cold ones. It builds familiarity before the sales conversation even begins, and warm leads are significantly easier to convert because trust already exists.
Small changes can have a big impact
If you’re reading this and realising your branding feels a little all over the place, there is no need to panic.
Most business owners don’t intentionally create inconsistency. It usually happens because your business evolves over time, your services change, confidence grows, new systems are introduced and before you know it, your website looks one way, your social media looks another and your proposals belong in a completely different decade.
Start small. Look at the key touchpoints within your business and ask yourself whether they feel connected. Do they feel like they’re telling the same story? Are they representing who you are today?
You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight. Take one thing at a time and make small improvements.
