5 Ways to Make Social Media for Business Fun

If your social media marketing feels stressful, exhausting and overwhelming you’re not alone, but fortunately it doesn’t have to be that way! In fact I believe it can and should be a fun and creative way to connect with your audience. Therefore I want to show you 5 ways to make social media for business fun.

You might just find that when you start having more fun with your social media presence, you start having more success too – what’s more engaging than someone who really enjoys what they’re putting out there?

1. Stop trying to game the algorithm.

Instead of creating content for The Algorithm™, create it for your followers and the people you want to be working with. Keep their needs in mind when coming up with ideas and turning them into posts but equally, don’t forget what types of content you love to create – if you hate video, don’t prioritise video content.

The truth is you don’t have to do Reels or lives or post 7 days a week or join Clubhouse, you just have to listen to your audience and be true to yourself.

2. Focus on connection.

Rather than getting hung up on creating more content, think of social media as a way to get to know others. Spend the majority of your time getting involved in comments, hanging out in Facebook groups, and joining in with Twitter chats.

If you’re goal oriented, try setting a goal to have one conversation with someone you don’t already know or follow each day instead of gaining new followers yourself. Have those interesting chats, discover other amazing accounts and be an active part of the community – connecting with great people can totally change your social media experience.

3. Think creatively.

Let go of all the “shoulds” that are stopping you from trying new things on social media and let yourself think creatively about how you use the platforms you’re on.

We’re all figuring it out, even the professionals, because social media is an ever changing thing. New features are added regularly, what does well changes as trends shift and life happens, so allow yourself to think outside the box and give things a whirl.

Now are you starting to believe there are 5 ways to make social media for your business fun?

4. Embrace imperfection.

In a similar vein, your content won’t be perfect and that’s OK. No one piece of content is going to do everything for you, no one piece of content is going to get everything right, so accept that and choose to put content out anyway.

As a recovering perfectionist myself I know this can be tough, but the pressure we put on ourselves to create “perfect” content only saps the joy from the creative process. The aim isn’t perfection, it’s connection, and nobody can connect to you through the content you’re not putting out because it’s not up to your standards.

5. Ditch politeness follows.

Your feed is just that – yours. You don’t owe anybody a follow; not your business coach, not your best friend, nobody. Choose who you follow based on what they post and how it makes you feel. If you enjoy their content, follow them but if you don’t, or you stop enjoying it at a later date, give yourself permission to unfollow.

What we see in our feeds dramatically changes how we feel about social media and ourselves. I follow very few social media managers because I can’t help but compare and find myself lacking. You can support other businesses and colleagues in other ways; recommendations, shout-outs and collaborations to name a few, you don’t have to follow them.

Business and marketing can be fun!

It’s important to remember that running a business doesn’t have to be a slog, you’re allowed to have fun with it and that includes with your marketing. Especially if you’re doing something you’re passionate about, you should be enjoying it!

So if you hate social media, think about why you hate it because that’s where you can start making changes to make it a much better experience for you and your followers.
